Definition
Bancassurance is the distribution of insurance products by a bank to its customers. Bancassurance software is the system that runs that business: it lets bank staff quote and place cover with partner insurers, records the resulting policies against the customer, tracks premiums and commissions, and manages renewals and claims follow-up.
In many markets, including Kenya, banks distribute insurance through a licensed bancassurance intermediary, which makes the operational model closer to that of an insurance broker working inside a bank.
Why banks need dedicated software
Insurance is often sold alongside credit — cover on a mortgage, a vehicle loan or an SME facility — and increasingly as a standalone product to retail customers. Without dedicated software, banks typically face:
- Policy details held in spreadsheets or insurer portals, invisible to relationship managers
- Commission income from several insurers reconciled manually each month
- Renewals missed, leaving customers — and sometimes loan collateral — uninsured
- No single view of which customers hold which cover
What bancassurance software does
| Area | Capabilities |
|---|---|
| Distribution | Quotations from several insurers, comparison and binding through a single workflow |
| Policy records | Policies, insured items and endorsements recorded against the bank's customer |
| Premiums | Premium collection and tracking, often linked to the customer's bank account |
| Commissions | Commission calculation, deductions and reconciliation per insurer |
| Renewals | Renewal reminders, re-quoting and confirmation |
| Claims | Claims logged and followed up with the insurer on the customer's behalf |
| Control | Role-based access, approvals and audit trails for the bank and the intermediary |
Integration is the hard part
Bancassurance sits between two worlds. The software must connect:
- The bank's systems — customer records, accounts for premium collection, and the lending system where cover is linked to a loan
- Each insurer — for quotes, binding, policy documents and endorsements, through APIs where available or structured file exchange where not
- Finance — to record commission income and reconcile insurer payments
Questions to ask when evaluating bancassurance software
- Can staff quote with several insurers in one workflow?
- Are policies recorded against the bank's customer record, and can they be linked to loans?
- How are commissions, statutory deductions and insurer payments reconciled?
- What insurer integration methods are supported — API, file exchange or both?
- How are renewals tracked and who is accountable for them?
Implementation plan for a bancassurance platform
| Phase | Activities | Exit criteria |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Discovery | Map products, insurers, branch workflows, commission terms | Agreed scope and data-authority design |
| 2. Core setup | Configure classes, insurers, commission rules, roles | Pilot users trained |
| 3. Integration | Customer and account data from the bank; insurer exchange (API or file) | End-to-end test of quote to policy |
| 4. Pilot | Selected branches and products | Renewals and commissions reconciling |
| 5. Rollout | Remaining branches and insurers | Management reporting in use |

Frequently asked questions
- What is bancassurance?
- The distribution of insurance products by a bank to its customers, usually through partnerships with insurers and often alongside credit products.
- Who regulates bancassurance in Kenya?
- Insurance intermediation, including bancassurance intermediaries, falls under the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA), while banks are supervised by the Central Bank of Kenya.
- How is bancassurance software different from broker software?
- The core functions are similar — quotes, policies, premiums, commissions, renewals — but bancassurance software must also connect to the bank's customer, account and lending systems and fit branch workflows.
- Can insurance policies be linked to loans?
- Yes, where the software and integration support it. Linking cover to the loan it protects lets the bank see whether loan collateral remains insured and act before cover lapses.
